Shenmue Storyline

The story began in December 1986, set in Yamanose of Yokosuka, Japan. On that snowy day, Ryo Hazuki, an eighteen-year-old Japanese student and martial arts practitioner arrived home to find a black car parked outside his residence and the board bearing the 'Hazuki Martial Arts School' title broken in two on the ground. Ryo entered and found the old female house keeper, Ine-san lying on the floor, injured. She told him to hurry to his father. Outside the dojo, Fuku-san, a student of Ryo's father was thrown out of the dojo doors and rendered unconscious shortly.

In the dojo, Ryo saw his father, Iwao Hazuki confronted by a cold looking Chinese man dressed in deep green silk robe as two other men in black suits stood by the door. The two men in black suits hindered Ryo’s way. The Chinese man demanded his father to hand over a mirror but Iwao refused. Iwao attacked the Chinese man using the Hazuki styled martial arts but the man dodged his every move. Iwao’s punch was then countered by the man who struck him down with two powerful kicks.

Ryo charged forth from behind the Chinese man but he dodged Ryo's punch and hit his chest with a palm move which sent Ryo flying some distance away to the ground. Iwao insisted not to tell the Chinese man about the mirror's whereabouts. The Chinese man then grabbed Ryo by his throat and lifted him up saying he would kill Ryo if Iwao refused to cooperate. Helpless, Iwao told the Chinese man that the mirror was buried under the cherry tree. The Chinese man dropped Ryo to the ground and ordered one of the black suited men to retrieve it.

He asked if Iwao remembered Zhao Sunming, the name of the man Iwao killed in Meng Cun. Iwao reacted surprised and said, ‘’it can't be...you’’. The Chinese man told Iwao to get up and that he would allow him to die like a warrior. Iwao got up feebly and pulled his last punch and the man dodged and struck him down with a fatal palm move.

The man in black suit returned with a jade green stone mirror with a dragon design and handed it to the Chinese man who he addressed as Lan Di sama. Ryo saw a tattoo with Chinese symbol on Lan Di's arm before he walked out of the dojo. Unable to get up, Ryo crawled to his motionless father. ‘’Forgive me for leaving you alone... Your friends...keep.. friends...those.. you love...close to you.’’ Iwao died in Ryo's arms after these words and the snow outside turned into rain.

For nights, Ryo had nightmares of the scene of his father's death and killer-- Lan Di.

Four days later, Ryo recovered from his injury and set off to gather information about the intruders on that snowy day despite Ine-san's advice that he should continue resting. Ryo went to find Fuku-san in the dojo.

While passing by the cherry tree, Ryo was filled with memories as a child learning the Elbow Assault move from his father under the tree.

Fuku-san said the intruders came out of nowhere and Lan Di demanded the mirror from Ryo's father that day before he was thrown out of the dojo by the men in black suits. Fuku-san persuaded Ryo not to pursue the intruders as even his master Iwao Hazuki could not defeat them. Ryo insisted he has made up his mind and he would avenge his father.

Out in the neighborhood of Yamanose, Ryo heard the sound of a kitten and saw the little girl Megumi near the shrine. Megumi asked Ryo if he could keep a secret from her mother. Ryo promised Megumi and she showed him the kitten in an open cardboard box.  Megumi said the kitten looked hungry and Ryo fed it with a fish from the nearby shrine. Megumi said the kitten's mom was run over by a speeding black car on that snowy day, leaving her young alone in this world.

Ryo pitied the orphaned kitten, relating its tragic plight to his own as both of them lost a parent on that same day. Megumi said the black car almost hit Yamaguchi san, causing him to hurt his back in the process. Ryo visited Yamaguchi san, an elderly man living just next door to Ryo's close friend, Naoyuki at Sakuragaoka. Yamaguchi san said the black car headed for Dobuita but he failed to notice the license plate number due to the thick snow.

Ryo went to Dobuita and asked his childhood friend, Nozomi at Aida Florist shop if she noticed a black car on that day. Nozomi told him that a speeding black car splashed mud on her that day and that Tom at the hot dog truck had an argument with the people in the black car. Ryo later learnt from Tom (a cheerful Afro-American and good friend of Ryo) that he scolded the people in the car for almost running him over. Tom said the Chinese man in deep green velvet gave him a cold glare. Tom suggested for Ryo to try the Global Travel Agency to ask about location of local Chinese. Ryo was told by the man at the counter to ask Tao-san at the Ajiichi Chinese Restaurant.

Tao-San said most Chinese who came to Japan belonged to one of the Three Blades--the cook who uses knives, the tailor who uses scissors, the barber who uses razors. Tao-san said people of the Three Blades knew each other very well and might offer useful information on people who came from China.

Ryo was told to visit Maeda-san for the barber, Itoi-san for the tailor, and Manpukuken Ramen for the cook. Tao-san said there was another barber shop called the Liu Barber and Hair Salon but they were having a hard time as Liu-san's father was in the hospital and the shop has been closed recently.

Ryo visited Itoi-san and said he was looking for Chinese people who were members of the Three Blades. Itoi-san asked Ryo to ask Liu-san at the barber. Ryo asked how Itoi-san knew about the Three Blades and he said he was a naturalized Japanese and in China, his name was Su Jian Ren.

Ryo eventually visited Liu's Barber. The stall owner did not know anything about anyone named Lan Di and said his father, Liu san might know more as he was a first generation Chinese who owned a shop in Yokohama from before the war. He said his father has just been discharged the day before and was probably exercising at Suzume Park.

Ryo went there and found an old man sitting on a bench who he confirmed later to be Liu san. Liu san said the proud elite of the Three Blades were also imperial bodyguards who protected emperors from assassinations with their razors, knives and scissors. Liu san gathered from the name Lan Di that he was likely a member of the Chinese mafia or black market cartel. Liu-san said they have developed a base in the harbor to bypass customs and expand their activities. Thus, sailors would know more.

Ryo gathered news that sailors usually hang out at bars at night. Ryo walked the alley to Heartbeats Bar and ran into two thugs--a Caucasian and an Afro American hindering his way. Ryo told them to get out of his way and they attacked Ryo. Ryo fell the first thug with a throw move and the second with a knee thrust.

At the bar, Ryo asked the bartender if the men sitting by the tables were sailors. One of them got up and questioned Ryo if he was some kind of TV detective. Ryo told him to back off and he attacked Ryo, followed by two other.  Ryo fought them off with his martial arts moves making quite a scene and the bartender agreed to tell him more but in return, Ryo must promise never to show his face there again. Ryo agreed. The bartender told Ryo to look for a man named Charlie who dealt with smuggled goods and was well known in the underworld. He wore shades and a black leather jacket. Also, he has a tattoo on his arm. Ryo learnt that Charlie loved showing off his hawg and would stop by the jacket shop in Dobuita at times.

On his way to the jacket shop, Ryo ran into one of the two thugs he met earlier at the alley outside Heartbeats Bar who agreed to bring him to meet Charlie. Instead, he lured Ryo to a parking lot where the same three guys from the Heartbeats Bar surrounded him. Ryo defeated the four of them and made one of them talk by locking his arm. Ryo noticed a tattoo on the man's arm. He told Ryo he did not know Charlie and he got his tattoo from Okinawa, though he heard there was a tattoo parlor in Dobuita as well.

Ryo found out the location of the tattoo parlor and the tattoo artist working there persuaded Ryo to let him try his skill on him. Ryo refused and asked if he knew Charlie. The tattoo artist told Ryo to come back the next day to try his luck. Ryo returned the next day and saw the same two thugs he met at the Heartbeats Bar alley doing a tattoo. They left in fear when they saw Ryo walked in. The tattoo artist told Ryo that Charlie was at the back of the parlor. Ryo unveiled the blinds covering the bed and a man in shades attacked him with a knife. Ryo dodged and disarmed him, realizing the tattoo on his arm, which however, was different from Lan Di's. Ryo locked Charlie's arm and pressed him for information on the Chinese cartel. Charlie agreed to arrange for someone from the cartel to meet him at 3pm the next day at the arcade.

Outside the parlor, Ryo saw Nozomi waiting for him. She was concerned that Ryo did not show up at the college orientation that day and asked if he has decided where to go. Ryo said he hasn't but the school he chose would have karate. Nozomi said it was about time he studied for the entrance exams and said she was worried about him, knowing what he was going through with his father and all. Ryo promised to talk more about this with her later and told her to avoid coming to such a dangerous place.

After Ryo sparred with Fuku-san at the dojo the next morning, he told Fuku-san that he has found leads on the Chinese cartel. Fuku-san dissuaded him to go but Ryo's mind was made up. Outside the residence, Ine-san tried to stop Ryo. Ryo said he could not believe his father killed someone and told her to step aside. Ine-san said she has something to give him. Inside the residence, Ine-san handed Ryo a letter addressed to his father that arrived four days after his father died. She has hidden it away in fear that Ryo would put his life in danger after seeing it but she felt he ought to know. The letter, however was written in Chinese.

On his way to the arcade, a little boy came crying to Ryo, saying that a man took his soccer ball, and only agreed to return him if he brought Ryo to the construction site. There, Charlie awaited with several other thugs, planning to get back at Ryo. Charlie threw the ball back to Ryo and he passed it to the boy. Ryo defeated the thugs but Charlie grabbed the boy as hostage while another thug tried to ambush Ryo from behind. The soccer ball fell from the boy's grasp, rolling over to Ryo who kicked it towards Charlie and hit it right in his face. Ryo swung his arm back and knocked down the thug behind. Charlie escaped saying he would not forget this.

Ryo learnt the little boy was Chinese when he thanked him by saying 'xie xie' which meant 'thank you' in Chinese and said his name was Xia Gaowen. At Dobuita, Ryo met Gaowen playing along the road. Ryo asked Gaowen if he knew anyone who could read a letter written in Chinese. Gaowen said his grandmother, Xia Xiuli who worked at the Russiya China Shop could. Ryo showed the letter to Xiuli who was grateful to Ryo for coming to Gaowen's rescue. Xiuli said the letter was written in reverse Kanji and in a special style. She read the letter through the mirror's reflection which translated as follows:

''Beware of those who pursue the mirror. If you ever need help, seek the aid of Master Chen.
-Zhu Yuanda''

She then noticed something written on the back of the letter which read as follows:
''Tian zhi fu, jiu tiao long, di zhi mu, wo de you''
She translated the words as ''Father's Heaven, Nine Dragons, Mother's Earth, Comrades''

Xiuli said she could not make any sense out of the words. There were also ancient characters written on the letter which Xiuli believed to be a phone contact number: 0468615647

Ryo dialed the phone number and a man with a stern voice picked up and said, 'Father's Heaven', to which Ryo replied, 'Nine Dragons'. He then continued, 'Mother's Earth' and Ryo replied 'Comrades'. The man with the stern voice said 'Warehouse No.8' and asked who Ryo was. He then hang up the phone when Ryo tried to confirm if the number belonged to the Chen residence. Ryo checked the phone book again and learnt the phone number belonged to the Amihama region where the harbor was based.

As Ryo arrived home that day, he got a call from Nozomi asking him to meet her at the park at Sakuragaoka. Nozomi said her father called her insisting that she returned to Canada. Afraid she would be leaving anytime, she told Ryo about her feelings for him. Ryo however said he wasn’t sure about how he felt but he would let her know when he was ready.

Ryo took the bus at Dobuita to the New Yokosuka Harbor and witnessed a man being blackmailed by two others. Ryo intervened and defeated the blackmailers. One of them wearing a black jacket and purple T-shirt with cartoon design pleaded Ryo not to hurt him and gave Ryo direction to Warehouse No.8. Ryo let the two of them go and headed for the warehouse but only authorized personnel was allowed entry. Ryo sneaked in through the opened rear window by climbing piled up crates. Ryo overheard two contractors talking in the office about a wrong delivery which was supposed to be sent to the Warehouse No. 8 of the Old Warehouse District. Ryo learnt that there was another Warehouse No. 8.

Ryo met Hisaka-san, a female friend who worked at the takeout stand in the harbor and learnt the way to the Old Warehouse District. However, Ryo was not allowed entry. On his way back, Ryo saw Mai, a young female student in uniform asking for money from her elder sister, Hisaka-san. Hisaka-san refused and Mai left with two female delinquents in uniforms after calling her 'prude'. Hisaka-san urged Ryo to talk to Mai as Mai knew Ryo since young. On his way to find Mai, Ryo saw a homeless man being chased out of Warehouse No. 4.

The homeless man asked if Ryo could buy him a drink on this cold day. Ryo agreed and bought him a hot coffee can drink from the nearby vending machine and the homeless man expressed his gratitude.

Ryo followed Mai to an area outside of Warehouse No. 17. Ryo told Mai that her sister was worried about her and she should return home. The two female delinquents got up and attacked Ryo with weapons but were promptly disarmed and knocked down by Ryo. Ryo told Mai that he would not preach to her but she should not treat her sister like that and he walked off.

Ryo reported back to Hisaka-san and learnt she was going to deliver meals to the security office at the Old Warehouse District. Ryo offered to do the delivery for her and she was grateful. Hisaka-san said she did not understand why they always order twelve meals but there were only ten security guards. At the security office, Ryo overheard two security guards talking about shortage of manpower and shift change between 8pm to 9pm. Ryo knew the shift change period was his only chance of sneaking in. Ryo returned at 8pm that night and sneaked in past the guardhouse where the guard was busy reading inside. Ryo sneaked past the guards on patrol to a warehouse labeled with a huge number '8'. The warehouse was dark and empty. A Chinese man in dark grey suit with a stern voice emerged from the darkness and prepared to fight Ryo but was stopped by another elderly Chinese man dressed in red robe standing on the stairs--Master Chen.

The Chinese man in dark grey suit obeyed and Master Chen descended down the stairs asked if Ryo was the one who called earlier on the phone. Ryo admitted and said the instructions came from the Chinese letter. Master Chen confirmed the handwriting on the letter was Zhu Yuanda's but said the letter arrived too late. Master Chen said Ryo's father and Zhu Yuanda brought back a certain mirror from China long ago. Ryo said the mirror was stolen by Lan Di.

Master Chen said Lan Di was the leader of an organization called 'Chi You Men (蚩尤门)' and he was a master of a deadly martial arts. Guizhang, the Chinese man in dark grey suit addressed Master Chen as his father and said he did not need to tell Ryo anything. Master Chen insisted saying he was bound by his promise to Zhu Yuanda about Ryo's father. Master Chen asked Ryo if only one mirror was stolen as there was another--the Phoenix Mirror. He explained the Phoenix is a mythical bird of Chinese legend that guards human life and he believed the mirror was at Ryo's house. He asked Ryo to find it first.

Ryo asked Ine san if she knew anything about the Phoenix Mirror and she said there was something very important that Iwao stored in the Antique Shop in Dobuita some time ago. The Antique Shop owner has not heard anything about a mirror but handed over to Ryo what his father asked him to store--the Hazuki Family Crest--an antique passed down to the Hazuki heirs across many generations once they turned eighteen.

Ryo met Guizhang on his way back to his residence at Sakuragaoka. Guizhang attacked him and Ryo fought back. Guizhang stopped the fight eventually and said Master Chen had tasked him to guard Ryo. Guizhang said it was vital that Lan Di must not find the Phoenix Mirror or else no one would be able to stop him. Unbeknownst to them, a thin and creepy looking skinhead with bulging eyes has been eavesdropping on their conversation on the roof of a nearby house.

Back at the dojo, Ryo found a round slot and a rectangular slot behind 2 paintings hanging on the wall. Ryo slotted the Hazuki Family Crest into the round slot and the katana which was kept inside a box in the dojo into the rectangular slot and heard the sound of unlocking mechanism. Ryo pushed the wall revealing a small empty room with a trapdoor and a ladder leading to the dark basement.

Ryo carried a torch light and found at the end of the narrow passage, a square room occupied with Chinese antiques and old furniture . Amongst, he found an old photo of his father in his younger days with a unknown man smiling next to him. Ryo also found a white leaf slipped inside a book, a yellow Talisman with red writing, a banner with Chinese words which read as 'all good deeds shall be rewarded'.  At a corner of the room, Ryo saw scratch marks on the wooden floor next to the wooden shelves and pulled the shelves away to reveal a portion of a wall which was colored differently. Ryo smashed it with the axe near the wall and found within a box containing a mirror with a phoenix design--the Phoenix Mirror.

Ryo showed Fuku-san the mirror and said he felt like the mirror was pulling him in when he looked at it. Fuku-san was worried the mirror was possessed or something. Ryo contacted Master Chen by phone using the passwords and took the mirror to Master Chen at the warehouse who said it was indeed the Phoenix Mirror made of Phantom River stone. Ryo asked why Lan Di only stole the Dragon Mirror and Master Chen said Lan Di probably did not know Ryo's father had both the mirrors. Master Chen said a long time ago, Zhu Yuanda once told him that when the dragon and the phoenix meet, the gates of heaven and earth will open and Chi You will resurrect itself on earth.

He explained Chi You was a legendary Chinese monster which would devour their world and Lan Di would try to make use of both mirrors. But he has no idea of what Lan Di would try. Amidst this moment, the creepy looking skinhead jumped from above and snatched the mirror. While escaping, Master Chen instructed Ryo to press a switch which operated the mechanism the skinhead was standing on and the mirror fell out of his grasp as he lost his balance. The skinhead escaped through the window. Master Chen and Guizhang suspected the Mad Angels were behind the attack and they were the ones who guided Lan Di to Japan. Ryo wanted to find the Mad Angels to get to Lan Di but Master Chen said he has left for Hong Kong. Ryo asked for help to get to Hong Kong but Master Chen refused and advised him not to waste his life on revenge.

Ever since Ryo found the Phoenix Mirror, he started dreaming of an unknown peasant girl dressed in earth colored clothes sitting by a cliff gazing silently at the night sky.

Ryo realized he has to rely on his own means to get to Hong Kong. He discussed his plan with Fuku-san and that he intended to talk to Ine-san about the trip. Ine-san was eager to let Ryo go on the trip as a vacation after all that has happened before Fuku-san revealed that Ryo was going there to find his father’s killer. Ine-san dismissed the idea and refused to help. Ryo was annoyed by Fuku-san for spilling the beans.

Ryo decided to use his savings but it was far from enough to purchase an air ticket to Hong Kong and the renowned travel agency at Dobuita did not sell one way ticket. Fuku-san chipped in all his savings from his piggy bank to help Ryo make up the sum he needed but it still was not enough. Fuku-san suggested Ryo to ask Nozomi about travel matters as she traveled abroad frequently with her family. Nozomi told Ryo about the option of traveling by boat as her grandmother hated to travel by airplanes.. Ryo learnt that the travel agency in Dobuita did not sell any boat tickets and the one that did was the Asia Travel Company but Ryo was told it had a bad reputation.

Without other option, Ryo visited the Asia Travel Company where the receptionist was a lady engrossed with her face in the mirror and showed little heart in attending to Ryo. To his relief, he could afford the boat ticket and bought it on the spot. The lady took the money and told him to come back four hours later.

Four hours later, Ryo returned but the lady was nowhere in sight and in her place was another suspicious looking man. The man denied ever receiving Ryo’s money and that he didn’t know any lady working here. Ryo realized he has been scammed and insisted that he gave him his ticket. The other man in the room tried to get physical with Ryo and was knocked out by Ryo’s punch. Ryo pulled the man behind the counter by his shirt and threatened him to come clean. Intimidated by Ryo's anger, he promised he would contact him tomorrow regarding the ticket he paid for.

Fuku-san received a call the next day from Jimmy of Asia Travel Company and Ryo took over the phone. It was the man from yesterday and he told Ryo to come to the ‘You Arcade’ at 12pm for his ticket. At the arcade, Ryo was alone when the creepy skinhead jumped on him from behind and Ryo shook him off. The skinhead showed Ryo the boat ticket in his hand and ate it. Ryo learnt the skinhead wished to earn his chance to work for Lan Di by getting information from Ryo about Zhu Yuanda, someone who was an enemy of Lan Di. Ryo asked the skinhead who Lan Di was and he said he would only tell if Ryo proved stronger than him. They fought but Ryo, being no match for his agile praying mantis style ended up wounded. Fuku-san came in time and the skinhead escaped. Fuku-san helped Ryo back to his room to rest.

The next day, Ryo returned to the Asia Travel Company and Jimmy ran away when he saw Ryo. Ryo gave chase across the streets of Dobuita and finally caught him back to the travel company. Jimmy said he no longer has Ryo’s ticket as an employee has run off with all the money and he was broke. He also said he did not know who the creepy skinhead was but believed he was related to the Mad Angels and suggested that if Ryo worked at the harbor, he might meet members of the Mad Angels as they always harassed the new guys.

Ryo set out for the harbor office for hiring but was told there was no vacancy for the time being. Ryo then met Goro again, the blackmailer with the black jacket and purple cartoon T-shirt who he taught a lesson earlier. He called Ryo ‘bro’ and asked if there was anything he could help with. Ryo said he wanted to get a job at the harbor and Goro said he knew the foreman in charge of cargo and he would talk to him for Ryo. Goro told Ryo to meet him the next day in front of Warehouse No. 1 for his good news.

Work Day 1
The next day, Ryo waited in front of Warehouse No. 1 as told and saw Goro and Mai coming his way. He learnt that both of them knew each other and Mai managed to persuade the foreman—Yada-san to give Ryo a chance to work there. After meeting Yada-san at the office, he instructed one of the workers—Mark to teach Ryo about the operation of the forklift. Ryo later transported the rest of the cargo and completed his first day of work. Mark then told Ryo to come at 8am the next day as there was something they needed to do every morning before work. At evening, Ryo met Tom by his hot dog truck and asked him about the Mad Angels. Tom said they were a gang of bikers who attacked people at the harbor at night. Homeless people were usually the victims. When night came, Ryo saw the homeless man being chased by two men on motorcycles. When he intervened, one of the men challenged him to a bike race. During the race, the man played dirty by trying to knock Ryo off his bike but failed and went over the bay and into the water himself.

Work Day 2
When Ryo came to work the next day, Ryo learnt that Mark would conduct a forklift race every morning which was sort of a daily workout routine. During lunchtime, Ryo saw Mark being beaten by a group of thugs at the harbor. Ryo drove the thugs away and Mark said that those thugs were the Mad Angels who thought he was working with one of their enemies, someone named Chen who Mark did not know.

Ryo figured the man—Chen whom the Mad Angels mentioned was Master Chen. While transporting the cargo to the warehouse, Ryo was confronted by a gang of thugs who demanded protection money from him. Ryo refused to give in and the thugs ganged up on him but were beaten up and escaped shortly.

After getting his daily salary from the foreman that evening, Goro greeted him outside the office. Knowing that Goro knew a lot about the harbor, Ryo asked him about the Mad Angels and Goro pretended he has a stomachache and needed to go to the toilet. Ryo knew that Goro was lying and held him back. Goro said it was taboo to talk about them and anyone who did would be fed to the fishes. Goro said there was a loudmouth kid who got himself concrete boots for talking about them.

Ryo was attacked from Guizhang from behind who merely wanted to test his skill. Guizhang said Ryo could not even handle the Mad Angels, much less take on Lan Di. He offered to teach Ryo a leg move called the Swallow Dive. Ryo asked why he taught him that move. Guizhang asked Ryo if he was bent to go to Hong Kong even knowing he may die. Ryo said yes. Guizhang said he would do the same thing if it was him and that was the reason he taught him that move.

When night came, Ryo met the homeless man who wanted to teach Ryo a new move for helping him the night before. He told Ryo to punch him using the Hazuki style. Ryo was reluctant but did as told and the man dodged all of his punches with ease. The man said that the Hazuki style was revered amongst martial artists, including himself. The man said that there is more to mastery than offense and evasion without getting hit is an art in itself. The man taught Ryo the move called the Shadow Step. Ryo asked why did he not use that move on the thugs before and the man said there is no sense in fighting and a clean getaway is also victory.

Work Day 3
Ryo was harassed by the Mad Angels again at work. Some of them were the same guys from the Heartbeats Bar. Ryo thrashed them and asked the whereabouts of the Mad Angels. One of the threatened thug said they were at the back of Warehouse No. 17. On his way there, Ryo saw Mark seriously beaten up by them and Ryo stepped forward to stop them. After defeating them, Mark told Ryo that his brother who was about Ryo's age went missing some time ago after believed to have leaked some important information about the Mad Angels. Mark believed his brother was killed by them and warned Ryo to be careful. Mark said he heard from the Mad Angels about a black market deal with some Chinese cartel. Ryo met the homeless man again who imparted him the move Shadow Blade,  a follow up move to the Shadow Step he taught earlier--a hand move which was aimed at the back of the opponent's throat.

Work Day 4
During lunchtime, Nozomi’s friend Eri brought a shy Nozomi along and insisted to take a photo of both Ryo and Nozomi together. After taking the first photo, Eri asked both of them to stand closer and took a second photo. Ryo chose the second photo as keepsake. Nozomi told Ryo that she has decided to go back to Canada. Ryo respected her decision with unspoken reluctance. Nozomi said she would always treasure the photo and she would come back during her vacation. After work that evening, Ryo was confronted by three bikers and Charlie (the same Charlie at the tattoo parlor) was one of them. They tried to knock Ryo over and Ryo kicked one of them off and took his bike to pursue Charlie while kicking the other thug off from his bike along the way.

Ryo caught up with Charlie near Warehouse No. 17 where he was surrounded by several Mad Angels members. Charlie said no one has ever stood up to the Mad Angels and lived to tell about it. They intended to throw him to the bottom of the sea. Ryo defeated them and commanded the panicked Charlie to reveal the connection between the Chi You Men and Mad Angels. Charlie said all he knew was that a big shot was leaving soon and he was recently tasked to arrange a cruiser to take him out to a big ship offshore, a man who wore silk robe with a dragon on it. Ryo realized Charlie was talking about Lan Di who has yet to leave Japan and intended to find him before he did.

Work Day 5
After lunchtime, Ryo saw Goro lying on the ground and asked him what happened. Goro pointed to the sailor standing not far from them and said the sailor started beating him all of a sudden. The sailor was the same Caucasian Ryo met at the alley outside Heartbeats Bar. The sailor ran and lured Ryo to a warehouse where he and several others attacked him. Ryo dodged their attack swiftly and knocked them out. The sailor warned Ryo that they would go after his family and friends in time. Ryo punched him hard in the face.

After work, Mark told Ryo that he overheard the Mad Angels whispering something about Long Zha and that it was soon. Mark figured it was some Mad Angels black market deal. The homeless man was concerned about Ryo pursuing the Mad Angels and said it would be a shame for the Hazuki tradition to be lost if anything would to happen to him. He taught Ryo another move, the Cross Charge, a move which involved slamming into the opponent's side during evasion and was perfect for times when one was surrounded by multiple opponents.

Work Day 6
At the harbor, Goro and Mai came to find Ryo and Goro said he has decided to settle down, find a real job and marry Mai. Mai said Goro has a heart of gold despite not being too bright. Ryo was surprised and said that Mai was too young. Mai said it was okay as girls could get marry from sixteen. Ryo watched the pair as they walked off happily. At work, Ryo saw the Caucasian thug again talking with another thug, the one with him at the Heartbeats Bar alley before. Ryo asked them about the Long Zha and they bailed at once at the sight of Ryo. Ryo managed to get a hold of one of them and forced him to reveal when the Long Zha was. He said only the Mad Angels boss knew and his name was Terry. His whereabouts were however secret as Terry was a very careful person.

While receiving his salary, the foreman told Ryo that a young man in a suit came to look for Ryo a while ago and told him to pass Ryo a letter. The letter wrote, 'The Mad Angels are after you, beware...'. Ryo knew the sender was Guizhang and he decided to ask Master Chen about the Long Zha. Ryo called Master Chen and met him at Warehouse No. 8. Master Chen told Ryo that only the lowest Chi You Men members were involved in the Long Zha and Lan Di has nothing to do with it.

Ryo told Master Chen and Guizhang that the Mad Angels already knew that they were going to stop the Long Zha. Master Chen said that Terry's gang dealt with contraband items and the next big shipment was drugs. If Terry's gang would to succeed, their market would be destroyed. Ryo asked when would the Long Zha be held but Master Chen declined to reveal to protect Ryo from harm as he was bound by his promise to Zhu Yuanda.

Nearing midnight, Ine-san told Ryo she just received a phone call from Aida-san saying that Nozomi has not returned home. Shortly, the phone rang and the caller turned out to be the creepy skinhead who defeated Ryo at the arcade. Ryo heard Nozomi's voice over the phone telling him not to come and that it was a trap. The skinhead gave Ryo four hours to reach the back of Warehouse 17 or Nozomi would pay the price.

Ryo borrowed a bike from his close friend, Naoyuki  as buses have already stopped service at such late hour. Ryo rushed to the warehouse in time and fought his way in past several Mad Angels members. Further in the warehouse, a tall and intimidating Caucasian man ordered the thugs to stop. The man was Terry, leader of the Mad Angels who has learnt of Ryo's move on his members and said it would look bad on him if he was to let Ryo go.

He demanded Ryo to severely injure Guizhang if he wished to take Nozomi back. Terry said that as long as Master Chen was around, they could never gain full control of the Hong Kong route. Ryo agreed but on a second condition that Terry must take him to Lan Di. The Mad Angels members mocked Ryo for having such a death wish. Terry agreed and let Nozomi leave with Ryo. Ryo apologized to Nozomi for the incident and drove her home on his bike that night.

The next day, Ryo was called in by the foreman—Yada-san to the office and told that he could no longer let him work there due to his increasing trouble with the gang which would in turn affect his business. Ryo thanked Yada-san for allowing him to work there all this time and left the office.

Ryo met Tom who taught him a new move called the Tornado Kick and after which, told Ryo that he was going back to the States the next day but he would always remember Ryo as his friend even after they parted ways. They exchanged a best friend hand shake and Ryo ordered a hotdog from his stand for the last time.

That night, Ryo met with the Mad Angels members who set him off to confront Guizhang at the path he always passed by on his way home from work. Ryo told Guizhang that he wanted to fight him and while fighting, told Guizhang to feign defeat so that Terry could take him to Lan Di. Guizhang did not trust a punk like Terry to keep his word and refused to lose and the fight ended with the both of them beating each other down on the ground.

Terry saw his chance and tried to strike Guizhang with a mace but Ryo pulled Guizhang away in time. Guizhang vowed he would make Terry pay and Terry ran off. Both of them ran after Terry but were stopped by Mad Angels members. Both of them faced off the whole Mad Angels gang and defeated them all, leaving Terry. Guizhang told Ryo to leave Terry to him and Ryo took Terry’s weapon away telling him to fight fair. Terry was defeated and revealed the creepy skinhead has already taken Lan Di to the ship offshore.

Ryo was at wits' end to go after Lan Di and Guizhang promised to talk to his father to arrange Ryo’s trip to Hong Kong. Guizhang told Ryo to meet at the harbor the next morning and Ryo thanked Guizhang who said the same in return. With the necessary stuffs packed in his green haversack, Ryo bid Ine-san and Fuku-san farewell the next morning as they prayed for his safety in sadness.

At the harbor, Ryo thanked Master Chen for his help and Master Chen did the same to Ryo for his help in thwarting the ‘Long Zha’ and taking out the Mad Angels. He said Guizhang would also be accompanying Ryo to Hong Kong to find out more about Lan Di’s plan. He taught Ryo a throw move called ‘Swallow Flip’.

The creepy skinhead who was standing above caused a huge metal beam to descend on Ryo. Guizhang pushed Ryo away from the falling beam and kicked the beam away, injuring his leg in the process. The creepy skinhead who revealed himself as Chai jumped from above and said he would not let Ryo go to Hong Kong. Ryo finally defeated Chai who later tried to launch a surprise attack on Ryo but was unsuccessful and was hit into the water by Ryo’s Elbow Assault move.

Guizhang could not follow Ryo due to his leg injury and said he would do so once he has recovered. Master Chen said he did not know where Zhu Yuanda was, thus he told Ryo to look for someone he knew could be trusted, a Hong Kong elder master named Tao Lishao. He handed Ryo a letter with the address.

As Ryo boarded the ship, he looked back at the view of his hometown and closed his eyes for a moment. In his mind he thought about his encounter with Nozomi the night before. Then, he saw her praying before the shrine saying she was making a wish for Ryo to be safe as she found out from Fuku-san about Ryo’s trip to Hong Kong. She passed Ryo an amulet and said she has been busy with preparations to return to Canada. Knowing that both of them were leaving Japan, she told Ryo that she wished they would have more time. Ryo opened his eyes returning to reality and entered the ship, embarking on his journey to Hong Kong to find Lan Di.
